Purpose:
A huge time saver and productivity tool in Cleary is the Go/Links feature, otherwise known as short-links, which help employees navigate more quickly to the websites, docs, apps and pages that individuals and the team use most frequently in daily workflows.
Set-Up:
To start, employees will need to install either a Chrome or Firefox extension which will enable go/links in their browser. Please note, other browsers are not currently supported. Note: Other extensions related to go/links may have to be uninstalled for go/links to work in Cleary.
- Chrome: Click here to install the Chrome extension from the Chrome Web Store.
- Firefox: Click here to install the Firefox extension from the Firefox Web Store.
Creating Go/Links:
To create a Go/Link, click Go/Links on the top navigation bar, and click Create go/link.
Fill out the fields. The name will be what you type to access the link, while the display name will reflect the title of the go/link throughout Cleary. Enter the URL it should redirect to. You can also add a description of the link and a Custom Icon.
- You'll need to ensure your URL has https:// included to work properly.
- Attempting to create a go/link that already has been created will give you an error.
You can open the Advanced settings toggle to incorporate parameters into your Go/Links for deeper searches. This is handy for easily searching user profiles on Cleary or issues within JIRA. Add a {1} at the end of the URL representing the parameter.
For example, naming a go/link go/profile and setting the URL to https://cleary.gocleary.com/profile/{1} will let you type “go/profile/becky” to be directed straight to Becky’s profile in Cleary.
How to Use Go/Links:
Go/Links can be used within the Cleary app, in your browser’s address bar if you have the Chrome or Firefox extensions installed, or directly within Slack.
Without the Chrome extension, you can use the Go/Links page in Cleary or search Go/Links in Cleary's search field.
In a Web Browser
With the Chrome or Firefox extensions installed, simply type your Go/Link straight into the Chrome or Firefox address bar and you’ll be redirected to where the go/link redirects.
Tips:
- Use the shortcut Cmd+L on Mac or Ctrl+L on Windows to go to the url bar, then type your go/link to quickly navigate to a link without using your mouse!
- If you’re searching for something but aren’t sure what it’s titled or where it might be, you can try searching Go/Link names in your Chrome browser that you might have expected.
- If the Go/Link exists, you’ll be taken to that URL.
- If the Go/Link does not exist, you’ll be taken to Cleary's search results page with similar Go/Links that might have what you’re looking for.
In Slack
In Slack, you'll first need to install the Cleary app within Slack by clicking Add apps.
Once installed, type "/go" to open up the Cleary modal. Typing the name for the go/link you're looking for will populate the go/link in a channel or DM
Managing Go/Links
Any user on Cleary can create go/links, which will appear in My go/links and All go/links when created. Users can also click + Add go/link to my homepage to add links to the Key Links widget on their personal homepage on Cleary, making them even more accessible.
Go/links on the homepage:
Adding go/links to Default Homepage
If a user has the Link Manager permission enabled in Cleary, they can add go/links to the Default Homepage, which will enable those links to appear in every employee’s homepage! This is great for company-wide resources all employees should have quick access to.
They can also add Featured go/links, which will appear at the top of the Go/links page. These can be great for new company-wide initiatives.
To designate a user as a Link Manager, admins can navigate to Cleary Admin → Users → User Permissions.
- 💡Tip: Learn more about managing user permissions here.
Permissions
When installing the Cleary extension a warning is displayed that says “It can: Read and change all your data on all websites.” This is a default message from Chrome or Firefox security because the Cleary extension is required to work on all websites to replace the go/{name} into the URL that the Go/Link will redirect to. The extension will only replace those URLs when it detects a Go/Link is being used.
The only data collected by Cleary are the Go/Link usages and the Go/Link searches executed by the user.
FAQs
Q: Is the Cleary Chrome Extension safe to use? What does it do? What data does it have access to?
A: Two main functions of the Chrome extension:
- Enables go/link in the navigator, so anyone can go/THE_GO_LINK_NAME to access it.
- Searches for go links in the browser, people need to type go and TAB, and the browser will change to Cleary and any input will search for the go links. This is the only place we collect the data (the user’s search input), so we can filter the go links in the database.
The Chrome extension does not change anywhere other than Cleary, and does not collect data from anywhere not even Cleary. That's a default message from Chrome Security, because we have a scope allowing Cleary Extension to work on any website */* . We need that otherwise the extension would not work if you were on a tab in a random website and you wanted to go to go/some-link for example.
The extension changes URL addresses only when it starts with go/
